FAQ

Common questions

Does it update instantly?

Yes. Results update as you type.

Can it calculate increase and decrease?

Yes. The percentage change calculator handles both.

Three percentage calculations

The first calculator finds a percentage of a value: value multiplied by percent and divided by 100. The second finds what percentage one number represents of another.

The third measures percentage change from an initial value to a new value. Positive output indicates an increase and negative output indicates a decrease.

Examples you can verify

Twenty percent of 50 is 10. If 10 items out of 40 meet a condition, that is 25%. A price moving from 80 to 100 has increased by 25%.

Enter numbers without currency symbols. Results support decimals and are displayed with up to six fractional digits when needed.

  • 20% of 50 = 10
  • 10 out of 40 = 25%
  • 80 to 100 = 25% increase
  • 100 to 80 = 20% decrease

Zero and negative values

A percentage of zero is zero. When the total in the second formula is zero, the tool returns zero because division by zero has no finite percentage result.

Percentage change also returns zero when the starting value is zero. For negative starting values, the formula divides by the absolute initial value to keep the direction understandable.

Percent change is not percentage points

Moving from 20% to 25% is an increase of 5 percentage points, but a relative increase of 25%. These statements describe different comparisons.
