WebP often produces a smaller file while keeping good visual quality, but JPG remains more widely compatible.
Image compression reduces file size by re-encoding the visible pixels. The original width and height stay unchanged, while the quality setting controls how much detail JPG and WebP may discard.
PNG uses lossless encoding, so its quality slider has no effect here. Choose PNG for transparency or sharp interface graphics, WebP for smaller web images, and JPG for broad compatibility with photographs.
The browser accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF input. Output is JPG, PNG or WebP. Files must be no larger than 20 MB and decoded images must stay under 40 million pixels.
Animated GIF input is decoded as a still image because browser canvas export does not preserve animation. JPG cannot preserve transparency; transparent areas are filled with white before export.
Start around 80 to 85 for photographs and compare the preview with the original. Lower values usually save more space but may introduce soft edges, color banding or blocks around detailed areas.
A compressed result can occasionally be larger than the source, especially when converting an already optimized image. In that case keep the original, lower quality, or try WebP instead of JPG.
If the file is rejected despite being under 20 MB, its decoded dimensions may exceed the pixel limit or the browser may not support that AVIF or GIF variant. Convert the source in another application or reduce its dimensions first.
Very large images need memory for both the source and output. Close unused tabs on mobile devices and avoid repeatedly processing the same high-resolution file.
