Percentage change vs percentage points
Percent change and percentage-point change answer different questions. Confusing them can make price, survey and performance comparisons sound much larger or smaller than they are.
Percentage of a value
To find P percent of a value V, multiply V by P and divide by 100. Twenty percent of 50 is therefore 10.
This formula is useful for discounts, tax estimates and proportional allocations. Enter the numeric amount without a currency symbol, then apply the required rounding rule separately.
One number as a percentage of another
To find what percentage A is of total B, divide A by B and multiply by 100. Ten out of 40 is 25 percent.
A zero total cannot produce a finite ratio. The NoFussKit tool returns zero for that case instead of displaying an infinite or invalid result, so interpret it explicitly in serious reporting.
Relative percentage change
Percentage change equals the new value minus the initial value, divided by the absolute initial value, then multiplied by 100. Moving from 80 to 100 is a 25 percent increase.
The reverse move from 100 to 80 is a 20 percent decrease. Percentage changes are not symmetric because each calculation uses a different starting value.
Percentage points
If a rate moves from 20 percent to 25 percent, the difference is 5 percentage points. Relative to the original 20 percent, the increase is 25 percent.
State which measure you mean and include the original and new values. For finance, tax, medicine or law, verify data and required rounding with an appropriate professional source.
- 20% of 50 = 10
- 10 of 40 = 25%
- 80 to 100 = 25% increase
- 20% to 25% = 5 percentage points
